Broadband Satellite Internet by HughesNet
Many people considering the move to satellite internet wonder what kind of broadband internet access speeds they can expect. With the newly announced Ka band satellite internet now available from Hughesnet, download speeds of up to 3 Mbps are possible. This compares very favorably to what you might expect from DSL or Cable internet. For example, the basic DSL package offered by Yahoo DSL is 1.5Mbps/256 Kbps, or about half of the speed offered by the HughesNet ElitePlus satellite internet package
The new Elite packages from HughesNet are made possible by the launch in August of 2007 of the new Spaceway 3 satellite. The new internet service plans became available in June of 2008. The Elite service plan features download speeds of up to 2 Mbps. Cost for this service starts at $119.99 per month. The new ElitePlus service plan can run at downloads speeds of up to 3 Mbps for $189.99 per month. Their Home service plan starts at $59.99 per month.
But wait you say, you have heard that DSL is capable of speeds up to 10 Mbps. What about that? Although DSL has a theoretical speed maximum of 10 Mbps, in reality the service providers like Yahoo, AT&T and others typically put a much lower cap on the speed available to individual users. This strategy allows them to charge higher prices for higher bandwidth users.
The bottom line is that HughesNet subscribers now have access to high speed broadband satellite internet with service plans designed for home users as well as high bandwidth business users.
