How do Different Satellite Services Work When it is the Only Means of Communication?

Number one in your communication group you must have the same type of satellite phone.  For example, your group would need to all use a Globalstar phone or an Iridium phone to be able to communicate.  If part of your group hand Globalstar phones and another part used Iridium phone you would have to utilize landlines which could be disrupted in a natural disaster.  An example would be if you are using an Iridium phone calling a Globalstar phone the call would go from the Iridium handset to the Iridium constellation then down to an Iridium gateway.  The call would then be sent through a landline to a Globalstar gateway then the call would be sent from the Globalstar gateway to the Globalstar constellation then down to the Globalstar phone.  In this way you would be utilizing the public terrestrial network which could be disrupted.

With the Globalstar service, Globalstar satellite phone to Globalstar satellite phone calls are handled through the closest ground station to the user.  The call is sent from the originating Globalstar phone to the constellation then to the gateway. The gateway sends it back to the constellation where it is then sent to the receiving Globalstar satellite phone. This way if the local landline and cellular systems were disrupted you would have satellite communication because landlines are not utilized.

If the Sebring, FL gateway is disrupted then either the Clifton, TX or Canadian the gateways take up the slack.  If the public telephone system is down the gateways have dedicated T1 lines linked between them to use if the public telephone system is disrupted.  So if all landlines were disrupted you could call from Globalstar to Globalstar phone if needed even if the satellite phones are not sharing the same gateway.

With the Iridium service, Iridium satellite phone to Iridium satellite phone calls are handled totally by the constellation.  Calls are not sent through a gateway.  The constellation has intelligence built into the system where a satellite outbound call goes from the Iridium satellite phone to the Iridium constellation then the call is either sent directly down to the receiving Iridium phone or can be set to other Iridium satellites before being sent down to the receiving Iridium phone.  With the Iridium service when making Iridium to Iridium satellite calls the gateway is not utilized.

Both the Globalstar and Iridium service have their benefits and drawbacks.  It depends on your budget and requirements which phone would be best for you.

Globalstar has a constellation of 48 Low Earth Orbiting satellites, has coverage in 120 countries, a U.S. phone number, and the best call clarity in the handheld phone industry.  For more information go to the Globalstar products.

Iridium has a constellation of 66 Low Earth Orbiting satellites, has planetary coverage and an International phone number.  For more information go to the Iridium products.

New for the U.S. market is the Inmarsat BGAN product.  The Inmarsat BGAN products use portable terminals utilizing GEO stationary satellites.  The Inmarsat BGAN service is ultra reliable offering voice, fax, packet data and high speed streaming data.  Unlike the Globalstar and Iridium handheld satellite phones the Iridium BGAN portable terminal would use small antenna that needs to be positioned to acquire a stationary satellite.  The antenna would need line of site to the Inmarsat BGAN satellite which in the case of the U.S. would be toward the southern hemisphere.  The setup is very simple.  With the Inmarsat BGAN service, BGAN satellite phone to BGAN satellite phone calls are sent from one terminal to the satellite then the call is sent through the Inmarsat gateway then sent back to the satellite then down to the receiving Inmarsat terminal. This way landline or T1 lines are never utilized.  For more information on go to the Inmarsat BGAN products

When choosing the best phone for your emergency needs we recommend utilizing the same satellite provider.  Also keep in mind when using any satellite phone in areas where landline and cellular service has been disrupted a satellite phone cannot call a landline or cellular line that has been disrupted.  Many satellite phone users after hurricane Katrina had the misconception they could call a disrupted terrestrial phone service.
