The Evolution of Globalstar Service Rates

GlobalCom first started providing Globalstar products and service in December of 2000. In 2000 the Globalstar hand held satellite phone retailed for $1195.00 which is double the current pricing of the hand held phone. In 2001 the Globalstar home area calling rates started at $19.99 a months plus $1.49 per minute from anywhere in the U.S. and Eastern Caribbean to everywhere in the U.S. Depending on the service provider you used you could subscribe to the 250 minute plan for $249.00 a month. In the early years of Globalstar areas outside the home calling area did not include the 120 countries that are covered by Globalstar today. The roaming rates were very complicated and had to be calculated using an on-line calculator located on the Globalstar website. Depending on where you traveled and your call destination different roaming rates and long distance rates had to be calculated. Roaming rates could be extremely high in the early years of Globalstar compared to current roaming rates at as low as 75 cents per minute. In 2001 Globalstar satellite phones dropped to a market price of $795.00 with a retail price of 895.00.

In 2002 Globalstar wanted more subscribers so they come out with a very simplified plan for the home calling area $19.99 a month access fee plus 99 cents per minute. Roaming was still very complicated and the roaming minutes were still elevated compared to the current roaming pricing. The market price of the hand held phone dropped to 695.00 with a retail pricing at $795.00.

Globalstar’s desire for additional subscribers in 2003 lead them to new unheard of lower satellite phone service pricing as low as 17 cents per minute. These rates would compete with some cellular providers allowing Globalstar to capture part of that market with customers unhappy with the cellular service they were receiving. The service plans started with the Timeline 30 plan which included 30 home area minutes additional minutes were 99 cents per minute. The best value for the heavy user of the satellite phone would be the Powerline 3000 plans which included 3000 minutes per minute additional minutes were 49 cents per minute. With all the plans excluding the Timeline 30 voice mail was free. Globalstar simplified its roaming rates in the majority of the Globalstar coverage areas outside the home calling area were a flat $1.39 per minute which included Mexico and Iraq. These new flat rate roaming rates included long distance back to the U.S. Market price of the hand held phone dropped to 495.00 with a retail price of 595.00.

Service pricing stayed the same through 2004 with the exception of the smallest plan was changed from 30 minute to 40 minutes with a monthly fee of $39.95. Roaming rates remain unchanged. Globalstar had been subsidizing the cost of the hand held phone and in an effort to cut cost they increased the price of the hand held phone to a market price of $645.00 with a retail of $749.00. This price still was half the price of Globalstar’s closest competitor which was Iridium.

Globalstar’s service pricing continued unchanged until April 1st, 2005 when Globalstar come out with new service pricing across the board. Calls are now as low as 14 cents per minute. The home calling plans starts with the Freedom 50 plan which includes 50 home calling area minutes. Heavy users of the satellite can subscribe to the Freedom 4000 plan which includes 4000 home calling minutes additional minute are 29 cents per minute. Due to customer demand for a seasonal plan Globalstar now offers annual Liberty plans which start with the Liberty 600 plan which include 600 home calling area minutes that can be used anytime during the year. This allows the seasonal user to be able to use the minutes during the period they need to use the minutes without wasting minutes that would not roll over in a monthly plan. This is also an advantage to the Emergency response customer which only needs to use the phone in time of disaster. They can use the majority of the minutes during short periods of demand and not waist minutes that do not carry over on a monthly plan. Another advantage of the Liberty plans is that if the customer had a number of phones on the same Liberty plan under the same account the minutes would be pooled across all the users. This is very cost effective because the heavy users can use the majority of the minutes while the light users only use a minimum amount of the pooled minutes.

Improved services are in store for Globalstar customers in the Bahamas and Caribbean with the addition of the new Globalstar gateway in Sebring, Florida which should be on line in June of 2005.
