How deep sea charter vessels can benefit from a satellite phone
Destin has the title and reputation of being the “Luckiest fishing Village”. It has one of largest fishing fleets in Florida and a long history of having experienced Captains taking tourist on fishing excursions in the Gulf of Mexico. I have chartered numerous deep sea vessels lasting four to twelve hours long out of Destin, Florida. These trips can take you outside of cellular and VHF communication range. I always bring a satellite phone with me to show the Captain and crew.
The Captain has a number of responsibilities which includes passenger and crew safety, maintenance and CATCHING FISH!
Let’s look at a few of the communication options the Captain has when fishing in the Gulf. The first communication option is the cellular phone which is very low cost and reliable, “when you are in cellular range”. When you are in cellular range the communication is private and is not publicly broadcasted. You do need to subscribe to a service to get you the most cost effective use of the phone. The second option is VHF marine radio. This is the most common use of communication between boat Captains. You do not subscribe to a service and no longer need a FCC license to operate a VGH marine radio. When outside of cellular range VHS marine radio is the most commonly used means of communication. If the Captain is too far away from the coast guard land based VHS the Captain can contact another boat that might be closer to the shore. This boat could then relay you communications when neccassary. This obviously is not the most reliable means of voice communications when you are numerous miles away from shore. Another emergency communication device that can serve as an emergency beacon using satellite communication is a GPS-enabled EPIRB which eliminates the waiting time required for the traditional low-earth orbiting LEOSAR satellites to obtain a fix. The waiting time averages about 46 minutes. Those extra minutes can be critical in saving lives, particularly in the case of a medical emergency or a rescue in frigid waters. In a recent test off the coast of Miami, a GPS-encoded signal was routed through GEOSAR and the USMCC to the appropriate SAR facility in less than 2 minutes. Rescue craft were launched within 10 minutes. The EPIRB are incredibly durable and a trusted devise used to insure the safety and survival of the passengers and crew. The EPIRB does not have voice capabilities which would be valuable in an emergency.
A number of boat owners and captains are realizing a satellite phone is an inexpensive valuable communication tool that can be used for numerous functions. The hand held Globalstar phone can be purchased for less than $900.00 and service plans have voice communication for less than 20 cents per minute. For larger vessels Fixed Site Globalstar phones are also available. Its primary function is voice communications. The hand held Globalstar satellite phone is as simple to use as a cellular phone. To call anyone in the U.S. you simply dial (one) + (area code) + (telephone number) it is that easy. It is also simple to receive inbound calls from anyone because all Globalstar satellite phones from GlobalCom have a Texas phone number beginning with area code 254. Anyone with access to the Internet can also send free short text messages to the telephone. These free messages appear over the display of the phone. Globalstar uses 48 low earth orbiting satellites which will give the captain global regional coverage which includes over 120 countries as well as all of the Gulf of Mexico.
A number of the functions that can benefit the captain include two way communications with the booking service the captain uses to book additional charters. For the captain that makes a living chartering his boat he can stay in touch with his booking agent. Staying in touch with the booking agent is a money making feature of the Globalstar phone. The Globalstar satellite phone will also give the Captain access to the Internet to view weather reports and sea conditions which could prevent placing the boat in danger if weather conditions suddenly change. Emergency voice communication is a very important function of the Globalstar satellite phones. If the boat has mechanical failure or is sinking the authorities can be instantly contacted with a simple phone call. In the event of a medical emergency the coast guard can be instantly contacted to provide medical assistance over the phone as well as dispatch medical personal which would save lives. All these advantages makes a satellite phone an important communication tool for any Captain.
