Larger satellite Internet systems will restrict the bandwidth allowance for their users in order to allow all users access to the speedy Internet that such systems provide. When a user goes beyond the monthly bandwidth allowance, that user may either be denied service or charged for the extra bandwidth. In some cases, satellite Internet providers will give slower Internet access to the user.

What Users Will be Provided With at their Location

Every remote location that uses satellite-aided Internet will also be given a telephone modem. For two-way systems, a modem channel that operates in both directions can be used if data latency is more a priority than the bandwidth. The satellite channel itself can be used for data where speed and bandwidth are of a higher priority than latency, say when large files have to be transferred quickly.

The Portable Satellite Modem

Users can get a portable satellite modem, which is a self-contained unit in a box that should be pointed or directed in the direction of the Internet satellite that is being used. In other types of Satellite Internet, the alignment of whole satellites must be so precise so as to avoid interference. However, modems that are used in this satellite system have their own strength gauges so that the user can align the modem properly, and on their own.

These portable satellite modems can be connected to the Internet through an Ethernet cable, or a USB cable (Universal serial bus). They are often built with an integrated Bluetooth transceiver as well, and can even function as a satellite phone. A portable satellite modem will have its own battery, so that connecting it to a portable device such as a laptop will ensure that the laptop’s battery is not drained because of the modem.

Such portable modems are expensive to operate. Many companies can charge as much as seven dollars to a megabyte. The modem itself can cost anywhere from a thousand to four thousand dollars.
