One Way Multi-Cast Using Satellites

When using on-way satellite Internet systems, a remote site will use a proxy server at its earth station. This earth station proxy server is configured to take all outbound Internet traffic to a server, which ensures that no Internet user will exceed the assigned bandwidth limits. This Internet traffic is then routed to an encapsulator, which places the IP packets of users inside a DVB packet. These packets are transmitted to a DVB modem, from which they are transmitted to a BUC transmitter.

Another Type of Satellite Internet System

Add more functionality to this theory of one-way satellite operation, and you now have the one-way multi-cast satellite Internet system. This Internet system is used to distribute audio and video files and data. When operating in the U.S., an uplink station requires an FCC license, while individual users are under no such obligation.

However, many Internet protocols will not work through a one-way access system, since they require return channels in order to operate. If a user decides to use the Internet over a one-way system, data such as those coming from websites can still be distributed by taking them to a local storage unit at sites of end users; however, interactivity with websites through such a system is not often possible. This type of satellite Internet system is best for TV or radio content, which offers little interface for the user, but which provides a lot of data that the user can enjoy.

The Components of Such a System

The hardware for multi-cast networks will require a public switched telephone network. However, it will not require a user to have an Internet connection. Some applications may still require a server that is enabled for FTP, or file transfer protocol, in order to transfer broadcast data.

The software for such a system will also need some custom programming when used at a remote site. The software should be able to display data at the front end, and at the backend, filter, store, and present it in a selection interface. The station that transmits the data should also control access to data, make a priority queue, send the data, and have the ability to encapsulate it.
